Bone Densitometry (DEXA)

A Bone Mineral Densitometry (DEXA) scan is a special type of X-ray that measures bone mineral density. It provides information about bone strength or fragility and the risk of fractures or broken bones. The higher the density, generally, the lower the risk of fracture.

These low dose x-ray scans provide an overall assessment of your bones to assess for possible osteoporosis or reduced bone density. A dedicated x-ray unit is used to perform these scans.

FAQ

What is a DEXA scan?

A bone densitometry scan, also known as a DEXA , is an imaging test that measures the bone mineral density (BMD). This scan can be useful to help detect your risk of osteoporosis (bone loss) and fractures. Routinely the lower spine and hip are scanned.

What can a DEXA scan be used for?

The bone densitometry scan assesses the density of your bones to determine if they are brittle. The scan is mainly used to determine if you have osteoporosis, which is the medical term for brittle bones. Osteoporosis increases the risk of fractures and diagnosing this early can help your doctor manage the problem to reduce this risk in a timely manner.

Is a DEXA scan safe?

Yes. A DEXA scan uses very low levels of radiation, significantly lower than most standard X-ray examinations. It is considered a safe and non-invasive procedure.

Do I need to prepare for DEXA?

There is no specific preparation required for this scan.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid clothing with any metal accessories such as buttons, belts or zippers as these can affect the quality of the image. You will be provided with a gown if required.

How long does a DEXA scan take?

A DEXA scan takes 10-15 minutes.

Are DEXA scans bulk billed?

Yes — all eligible DEXA scans are fully bulk billed with a valid referral under Medicare.

How can I book a DEXA scan?
