United Radiology is a service provider for the National Lung Cancer Screening Program.


Lung screening involves a low-dose CT scan of the chest to support radiologists in identifying early abnormalities in the lungs before symptoms develop. Unlike standard CT scans, the low-dose CT used for screening minimises radiation exposure while providing high-quality images of lung tissue.


This targeted scan is specifically designed for patients at risk of lung cancer due to smoking history and other risk factors. Results are reviewed by our specialist radiologists and reported back to your referring doctor for clinical management.

Who Is Eligible for Lung Screening in Australia?

To participate in the National Lung Cancer Screening Program, patients must:

  • be aged between 50 – 70 years

  • have no signs or symptoms of lung cancer

  • be a current smoker or have quit within the past 10 years

  • have a history of smoking equal to 30 or more pack-years (your GP can help calculate this).

Important: Lung screening is not intended for symptomatic individuals. If you are experiencing persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, or coughing up blood, please consult your GP promptly.

How to Access Lung Screening at United Radiology

Visit your GP to discuss your risk and determine eligibility.

  1. Your GP will issue a referral for a low-dose CT lung screening scan.

  2. Book your scan at one of our United Radiology clinics across Melbourne

  3. Following your scan, our radiologists will prepare a detailed report for your referring doctor. Results are usually available within a few working days.

What Happens During the Scan?

Your low-dose CT lung screening appointment typically takes around 10–15 minutes. There is no special preparation needed:

  • A trained radiographer will position you in the scanner.

  • You lie on your back while the scanner takes detailed images of your lungs.

  • The actual imaging takes only a few minutes

Bulk Billing and Cost Details

Under the National Lung Cancer Screening Program, eligible screening scans are bulk-billed under Medicare — meaning no out-of-pocket cost for the CT scan itself.
